The Bastion – Sun & Rain UPF50+, Yellow

Twelve ribs. We counted, twice, because that's the kind of thing you do when you pick the umbrella you're going to live out of a tote bag for the next three years. The middle rod is steel. The ribs are fiberglass, not because fiberglass is fancier but because fiberglass flexes and snaps back, which is the only job a rib has when the wind picks up. We made this for sun and rain, in that order. The sun part is the part we actually designed around — the rain part is a bonus you discover in October.

What it's like in the sun

The inside of the canopy has a black-glue coating on 210T fabric, rated UPF 50+. The lab measured the wavelengths. We didn't bring a spectrometer on vacation. What we can tell you: the difference between standing under this and standing next to it on a July afternoon is the kind of difference you stop arguing about after ten seconds. The black layer reflects UV before it becomes heat, so the air under the canopy runs cooler than the air around you. It blocks UVB and both UVA bands — the short-wave and the long-wave. The number in the spec is the number on the lab report.

What it's like in the wind

Twelve ribs is more than most umbrellas carry. Most carry eight. The extra four are the difference between an umbrella that inverts in front of your in-laws and one that just leans into the gust and comes back. The fiberglass is the reason it comes back. Steel ribs would bend. Fiberglass ribs are stubborn about returning to shape, which is the entire point.

What it's like to live with

• One-button open and close. Press once, it opens. Press again, it closes. The button sits where your thumb naturally lands.
• Auto open and close. Both. Motor-assist on the open, motor-assist on the close. You're not fighting a stuck canopy in a crosswind.
• Folds to about 32cm. Goes in a tote, a backpack, the back seat of a rideshare. Not a coat pocket.
• Weighs around 380g. Heavier than the pocket ones, lighter than the wood-handle ones. You feel it in the bag but not in your hand.

Returns. 30 days, no restocking fee, umbrella goes back in any condition. We just ask that you tell us why.
