And it's not only for rain — the inside of the canopy has a titanium-silver layer that reflects the sun before it becomes heat. One umbrella, two jobs, no ceremony.

What it's like in the sun

The mirror-finish layer on the inside of the canopy reflects UV and keeps the underside cooler than the air around you. On a hot day, the difference is the kind of thing people notice and don't know how to explain — you just stand under it and your shoulders stop complaining. Rated UPF 50+, blocks UVB and both UVA bands. The numbers come from the lab that tested the fabric. We don't run one; we trust the report.

What it's like in the rain

The outside of the canopy has a lotus-leaf water-repellent finish. Rain beads up, beads roll off, one shake and the umbrella goes back in your bag mostly dry. Not bone-dry — the seams will catch a few drops — but dry enough that you're not putting a wet umbrella on the seat next to you.

What it's like to live with

• One-button automatic open and close. Press once, opens. Press again, closes. The button is the same button for both, which means there's one thing to find, not two.
• 190T high-density weave. Tightly woven fabric that doesn't let rain through. The umbrella word is: you stay dry.
• Tri-fold, around 28cm closed. Smaller than a baguette, bigger than a phone. Goes in most totes and backpacks.
• Weighs about 280g. Lighter than a can of soup. You forget it's in the bag.
