The Cuff - Tall Knit Beanie, Gray

We added this one because most of the beanies we looked at were short-crown, tight-fitting, and didn't do anything for the head under them. This one does. The crown has room. The cuff is wide. The whole thing is built around being a hat you adjust to the weather, not a hat that adjusts to itself.

What it's like to wear

The crown is high — tall enough to fold the cuff over without losing the shape, tall enough that there's room under it for actual hair, not the beanie-squashed-hair look that cheaper knit hats give you. The cuff is wide. Wide enough to cover your ears when the wind picks up, wide enough to fold back once and still have a cuff. Pull it up to forehead, pull it down to eyebrows, leave it at the ears — three positions, same hat.

What it's like in the cold

Acrylic is the main fiber, 61-70% of the blend, with the rest being the wool or synthetic that gives it the warmth rating. Acrylic keeps its shape, doesn't shrink the way wool does, and dries faster when it gets wet. It also doesn't have wool's natural lanolin, so it's the option for people who find wool itchy. We picked this one for the cold mornings that don't quite need a heavy wool hat. Late October, early March, the kind of weather where you step out and the air is sharp but the sun is still up.

What it's like to live with

• Hand wash, lay flat to dry. Cold water, gentle soap, flat dry. Machine washing will shrink the acrylic and warp the cuff.
